CHRIST the MIRACLE-WORKER: There are about 33 specific miraculous works done by the Lord Jesus as recorded by the four Evangelists. Yet often the writer will simply say, “and He healed them,” “and healed all who were sick,” “and He healed them all” (Mt 4:24; 8:16; 12:15). How wonderful He is! Three words are used to describe these amazing works: 1. Miracle (dunamis), meaning “mighty deed” and refers to the supernatural nature of the work. 2. Sign (semeion) points to the heavenly lesson behind the miracle. 3. Wonder (teras) indicates the effect it had on the observers. These miracles were windows into the kind of world it would be if Christ was recognized as Lord of all. Yet now, He says, “greater works than these” will be done by believers because He is exalted to the Father’s throne. Greater in scope, in number and in blessing. Not now bread for lunch but life for eternity, not now people physically raised but spiritually alive, not now physical sight, but the eyes of the heart seeing Him!
